How much is Rent Assistance in 2026?

From 20 March 2026, the maximum Commonwealth Rent Assistance is $188.20 per fortnight for a single person with no children. Singles with 1-2 children can receive up to $222.24 per fortnight, and singles with 3+ children up to $251.26. Couples without children can receive up to $177.20 per fortnight.

How is Rent Assistance calculated?

Rent Assistance is calculated at 75 cents for every dollar of rent you pay above the minimum rent threshold, up to the maximum rate for your category. For example, a single person with no children must pay more than $146.40 per fortnight in rent before CRA starts. Every dollar above that threshold gives you 75 cents in CRA, up to the maximum of $188.20.

Who is eligible for Commonwealth Rent Assistance?

You must be receiving a qualifying Centrelink payment such as JobSeeker Payment, Youth Allowance, Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Parenting Payment, Carer Payment, or Family Tax Benefit Part A (more than the base rate). You must also be paying rent in the private rental market — CRA is not payable for public housing or government-subsidised housing.

Does Rent Assistance count as income?

No, Commonwealth Rent Assistance is not counted as taxable income. It is a supplementary payment designed to help with housing costs and is paid on top of your qualifying Centrelink payment. It is not subject to its own income or asset test — eligibility is based on receiving a qualifying payment and paying private rent.
